Sticks and Storms

Last night we had a storm come through about 10 PM and it had a lot of wind as well as a little rain, almost an inch, and a few chunks of hail which didn't damage anything here Our Pecan trees lost a goodly bunch of dead branches (sticks) and the front yard was littered with them. I spent a couple of hours putting them in a pile and scheduling the city to "pick up sticks" which they are very good at. You can schedule the pickup on-line and they send you an email about the work order.

Rain and Growth

The rose is one of the prettiest flowers I know of. When I was growing up we had many rose bushes and my job, well one of them, was to dig around them so they could breathe. That was my dad's description. He maintained that you had to keep the grass and weeds out in order for them to flourish, they couldn't grow if they were surrounded by the choking weeds. Now that I am older I see his point but I have to admit that I am not as vigilant as I should be to keep the weeds out of the roses. This sample is from a bush in our yard along Ave N.  Recent rains have really helped the roses.

Pecan tassels! We have 5 pecan trees in the front yard and soon most of these tassels will be in the yard or on the street or sidewalk. We must take note though that each one represents a nut that will be delicious in the late fall when they begin to come down. We have had a lot of rain in the last week and more to come this week. Pecan trees love water and the rain will make for a great crop.

Our garden is planted with Tomatoes, Bell Peppers, and Squash. We have a drip irrigation system that keeps it watered for us and the fresh food that comes from it is really great.

We are in the process of painting the bricks on our house. They were painted when we bought it and we always wished they were not. Getting the paint off however was too much work so we are just changing the color and freshening it up. We think it will look really good when we are finished. This shows the color that it will be when we are done.
